High Noon: Ultimate Edition
NEWS AND REVIEWS
JULY 5, 2008
Inside High Noon’ encompasses the film’s creation and value in a tightly edited fifty minutes. The behind the scenes tale is told, but at least half the Frank Langella narrated documentary is devoted to the film’s importance in the greater pantheon. There’s a lot of focus on the film’s political subtext (the film is listed as both Bill Clinton and George W. Bush’s favourite), but there’s also plenty of focus on the craft and achievements of every major member of the cast and crew.

Disc two's centerpiece is the brand-new, 50-minute "Inside 'High Noon,'" soothingly narrated by Frank Langella. While it's unfortunate that none of the film's cast and crew is around to discuss their collective triumph, film scholars and celeb guests like Bill Clinton (who, along with Ike and W, named "High Noon" his fave pic) offer interesting insights into the pic's production history and its long-lasting influence. The doc provides some fascinating material for fans

There are plenty of interview subjects, including the sons of director Fred Zinnemann (who says the production design was based on the photographs of Civil War photographer Matthew Brady) and Carl Foreman. One noteworthy tidbit about this documentary: four minutes were taken out of the final cut, presumably at the insistence of Lionsgate. This crucial chunk is about John Wayne’s hatred for the film, ending with a kicker that shows The Duke’s disingenuousness and wrongheadedness. You can view the excised clip at insidehighnoon.com/video.html. I’m not sure why this part was edited out, but I am sure it was a stupid idea that fails to honor the sense of historical accuracy and comprehensiveness that High Noon deserves.
